Grades and Specifications

Petroleum coke is a hard, black to dark-gray carbonaceous material characterized by a metallic luster and porous structure. It typically contains 90–97% carbon and 1.5–8% hydrogen, along with varying amounts of nitrogen, chlorine, sulfur, and heavy metal compounds. Calcination removes moisture and volatile matter, increases carbon content, and improves electrical conductivity and high-temperature performance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between green petroleum coke and calcined petroleum coke?

Green petroleum coke is produced during petroleum refining and contains relatively high levels of moisture and volatile matter. Calcined petroleum coke (CPC) undergoes high-temperature calcination to reduce moisture and volatile matter, increase carbon content, and improve electrical conductivity, making it suitable for carbon and metallurgical applications.

What specifications should be considered when selecting petroleum coke?

Key specifications include sulfur content, fixed carbon, ash, volatile matter, moisture, particle size, and density. Electrical resistivity and other properties may also be relevant depending on the intended application. The appropriate grade should be selected according to the specific production process and quality requirements.
