Description

Carbon cathode blocks are key components of the cathode lining in Hall–Héroult aluminum reduction cells. A typical lining system includes bottom cathode carbon blocks fitted with steel collector bars, sidewall lining blocks, and carbon ramming paste, backed by refractory and thermal insulation materials within a steel shell.

During electrolysis, aluminum ions are reduced at the interface between the molten electrolyte and liquid aluminum. The bottom cathode blocks and steel collector bars provide the conductive path from the liquid aluminum to the external circuit.

Carbon cathode blocks for aluminum electrolysis are classified into three main types based on their raw materials and manufacturing processes:

1.Anthracite-Based Cathode Blocks

These blocks offer good mechanical strength and resistance to chemical attack. They are commonly used as conventional cathode lining materials in aluminum reduction cells.

2.Graphitic Cathode Blocks

Graphitic cathode blocks provide higher electrical and thermal conductivity than conventional anthracite-based blocks.

3.Graphitized Cathode Blocks

Graphitized cathode blocks exhibit low electrical resistivity and high thermal conductivity. They are used in aluminum reduction cells where high electrical conductivity and reduced cathode voltage drop are required.

Manufacturing Process

The manufacturing process varies according to the raw materials and the required degree of graphitization.

1. Anthracite-Based Cathode Blocks

Calcined anthracite is used as the primary aggregate, with graphite added where required. The prepared materials are mixed with a binder, formed into blocks, and baked before final machining and inspection.

Raw Material Preparation → Crushing and Screening → Batching and Mixing → Forming → Baking → Machining → Inspection

2. Graphitic Cathode Blocks

Graphitic cathode blocks are produced using graphite-containing aggregates, such as graphite and graphitized petroleum coke. Their manufacturing process is generally similar to that of anthracite-based cathode blocks, with differences primarily in raw material composition.

3. Graphitized Cathode Blocks

Graphitized cathode blocks are manufactured primarily from calcined petroleum coke. After forming, the blocks are pre-baked, impregnated with pitch, and re-baked to reduce open porosity before undergoing high-temperature graphitization.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the key factors in selecting carbon cathode blocks for aluminum electrolysis?

Key selection criteria include high electrical and thermal conductivity, adequate mechanical strength, resistance to abrasion and chemical attack, low porosity, and resistance to penetration by molten aluminum and electrolyte. Thermal expansion behavior, ease of manufacturing, ramming and installation should also be considered to ensure reliable performance in aluminum reduction cells.

What materials are used in the cathode lining of an aluminum reduction cell?

The cathode lining typically consists of bottom carbon blocks, sidewall carbon blocks, carbon ramming paste, refractory and insulating materials, and steel collector bars. The bottom blocks provide electrical conduction, while the sidewall lining, refractory layers, and insulation serve different functions in thermal management, chemical resistance, and structural protection.

What is the difference between graphitic and graphitized cathode blocks?

Graphitic cathode blocks are manufactured using graphite-containing raw materials, while graphitized cathode blocks undergo an additional high-temperature graphitization process. Graphitized blocks generally have lower electrical resistivity and higher thermal conductivity.
