Graphite electrodes need protection during transport, storage and handling, particularly at the machined sockets, nipple threads and mating surfaces. Impact, excessive mechanical loading and contamination can affect the condition of components before they reach the furnace.

Protection During Transport

Packaging and transport arrangements should protect electrodes from impact and damage to the connection surfaces. The handling requirements depend on the electrode dimensions, weight and the supplied packaging arrangement.

When checking a delivery, review the visible condition of the electrode bodies and the machined connection components. Damage or contamination at a socket or nipple should be identified before assembly.

Storage and Support

Electrodes should be placed on suitable supports and protected from excessive mechanical loading. Storage arrangements should also limit moisture-related contamination and protect machined surfaces from damage.

Keep the electrode bodies and matching connection components in a condition suitable for inspection and assembly. Use the product-specific storage instructions where these are supplied.

Handling Equipment

Use equipment appropriate to the dimensions and weight of the electrodes. Handling should avoid impacts and excessive loading on the electrode bodies and their connection surfaces.

The handling method must suit the supplied product and packaging. Follow the applicable lifting and handling procedures for the equipment and electrode configuration.

Checks Before Assembly

  • Inspect the nipple and socket for visible damage.
  • Check the mating surfaces for contamination.
  • Confirm the electrode and nipple connection dimensions are compatible.
  • Keep connection components clean during assembly.
  • Install the connection according to the specified procedure.

Poor alignment, damaged threads, contaminated contact surfaces or improper tightening can contribute to connection failure and electrode breakage. Use the applicable connection instructions rather than a general tightening value.

Connection Information

For matching nipple and socket dimensions, see Graphite Electrode Nipples. Confirm the required thread design and dimensions before ordering replacement connection components.
